The Seventh Annual Girls & Sports Day
Saturday, May 17th, 2008
8:00am-1:30pm
The Girls & Sports Program, launched in 2002, is designed to
- introduce girls to a variety of sports
- teach girls about the benefits of participating in sports and living a healthy lifestyle
- assist girls who otherwise could not afford it to participate in school sports, and
- help teen girls create positive peer relationships with others in their community. The program is targeted at girls between the ages of 7 and 16 who are residing throughout Yavapai County.
Girls & Sports Day Activities
Girls & Sports Day participants are divided by age into three
groups, and activities are tailored so as to be age-appropriate. At the
end of the day camp, participants are provided with a sports bag filled
with healthy snacks, information and other items that reinforce what
was learned in the camp. A registration fee of $10 is charged for
participation in the camp, and waivers are in place for girls who
cannot afford the registration fee.
Girls & Sports Day: annual health, sports and fitness camp for 260 Yavapai County girls between the ages of 7-16. The camp is led by Catholic Charities and co-planned by a community collaboration (WINGS—Women Involving Neighborhood Girls in Sports) that is made up of representatives from Catholic Charities, Prescott YMCA, Prescott Parks and Recreation, Yavapai College Athletics Department, Yavapai County Community Health Services and Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, Inc. Led by Catholic Charities’ Girls & Sports Program, Girls & Sports Day takes place every year at the Prescott YMCA, and includes:
Smart Girls Sports Fair: a series of 10-15 interactive booths facilitated by volunteer professionals that focus on girls’ health and fitness. Booths in previous years focused on proper dental and skin care, balanced nutrition, healthy dating relationships, healthy friendships, stress management, avoiding risk-taking behaviors (i.e., tobacco, drug and alcohol use) and career choices.
Sports Stations: a series of 8-10 sports stations that introduce participants to both traditional sports (e.g., basketball, soccer) and non-traditional sports (e.g., Tai Chi), as well as team sports and individual sports. Volunteer professionals (i.e., professional and college athletes, coaches) teach participants basic rules, use of equipment and techniques, and guide them as they turn instruction into action.
