Learn to Scuba Dive at the Prescott YMCA
We offer a variety of classes and activities. If you're curious about Scuba, you may want to try our Discover Scuba class where you will be introduced to the gear and breathing underwater without all of the classwork that is required for the full Scuba certification. If you decide that you would like to pursue your Scuba certification then sign up for one our in-depth Confined Water Scuba certification class. From there you'll move on to the Open Water Scuba certification. Once you have your Open Water certification you'll be able to join us on our dive trips or practice on your own on one of our open scuba nights at the pool.
Class Descriptions
Discover Scuba
Discover Scuba provides individuals an opportunity for sampling - an in-water diving experience before deciding upon committing to the confined water class. Discover Scuba includes a short “pool-side” briefing, learning a couple of scuba skills, followed by a fun-filled 20 minutes swimming, under water, in the safety of a pool. - Register 24 hours in advance. Space is limited.
- Fee: YMCA Members $25 Non YMCA Members $30
- Gear: All gear is included with the exception of a wet suit
- Required Documents: Liability & Medical Releases must be signed before taking class
- Minimum Age: 15 years old

Confined Water PADI Scuba Course
Getting people diving as quickly as possible is a philosophy of the Prescott YMCA and PADI Instruction. Getting new divers into the water quickly assures students a most enjoyable and complete learning experience. It really is about diving; we want you in the water. All programs are performance-based, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Students begin diver training by using independent study materials and continue learning under the guidance of an instructor. Once completing the full course, divers may use their certification to purchase air, plan their own dives, and continue their education. Classes offered monthly. Register 24 hours in advance. Space is limited.
To Become a Certified SCUBA Diver Requires the Completion of Three Distinct Sections:
- Knowledge Development
Take this section online thru padi.com or at the Prescott YMCA. Fee: $120.
Self learning, a key ingredient in the PADI system, requires that students read the PADI Dive Manual and review the PADI Scuba Diving DVD and answering the Knowledge Reviews in the Manual prior to the first class. Following each of the five sections in the Manual, a short quiz assures your understanding of the wonders of scuba diving.
- Confined Water Class
Where you Learn the skills required for diving. Classes are held each month in the YMCA pool.
YMCA Member: $229 and Community Member: $249
Age Requirements: All participants must be 15 years before the end of the class.
Special classes may be arranged for families with children 10 yrs. and older.
- Open Water Certification
Demonstrate your new SCUBA skills in the open water. We offer a certification classes at Lake Pleasant in Phoenix, or in San Carlos, Mexico. Class Fee: $289. Travel expenses not included.
OR maybe you'll choose to take your open water classes at a PADI dive center during an upcoming vacation.
General Information
- Minimum deposit of $100 required to hold spot in class.
- Total fees must be paid before start of class.
- Students taking their knowledge review section at the YMCA will receive a packet of information.
- Students taking their knowlege review online thru padi.com must bring their student registration form from padi.com with them to their confined water classes.
- Minimum age 15 years.
- All students should receive a “Class Description” for the Confined Water Class they are registering for.

Required Documents
- The Prescott YMCA PADI Liability Release and Assumption of Risk Agreement
- The PADI Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of Understanding
- The PADI Medical Statement at the beginning of each course prior to any in-water activities, regardless of training / experience level. If you answer any of the medical questions with a "Yes" you will need a doctor's signed permission form.
- Parent or guardian signature required on forms for participants less than 18 years of age.

- Diver Education Log - you keep
- Recreational Dive Planner - you keep
- The YMCA provides for class use (as sizes allow): Buoyancy Control Device, Mask, Fins, Snorkel, Wet Suit, Weights, Regulator, Pressure Gauge.
Open Water Certification Class
Open Water Certifications are currently offered at Lake Pleasant in Phoenix or in San Carlos, Mexico. The open water class provides student divers the opportunity to obtain their OPEN WATER CERTIFICATIONS. Once you have your open water certification you will be able to rent tanks and go diving in locations around the world.
Scuba Review
Scuba Review provides certified divers the opportunity to update their dive knowledge and skills, especially after a lengthy period of diving inactivity. Consisting of two parts – a Knowledge Review and a Confined Water Skills Review. - Register 24 hours in advance. Space is limited.

Open Scuba Night
A great opportunity for certified divers to try out new gear or just get back in the water after a long absence. Pool usage restricted to one lane and deep end.
- Fee: Members with all their own gear $8 (Includes one tank)
- Fee: Non Members with all their own gear $15. (Includes one tank)

- All participants must have full Open Water Certification to participate.
- All participants must sign Liability Waiver.
- Min Age 10 years with Junior Open Water Certification and accompanied by Parent with full scuba certification.
